Can you thrive in a dry writing environment? Yes!
If you shrivel up and die when opportunities aren't pouring in, you need to think xeric. A water source may not always be available, so a gardener has to be creative in bringing moisture in to tend to their plants if it isn't happening naturally. A writer needs to do the same if clients aren't falling in their lap.
Just as a gardener might use rain barrels to hold water for use during dry spells, the writer should have backup clients to go to when income dries up.
Need a quick few bucks? Query former clients and ask if you can help them with a short deadline. While you've got their attention, ask for a referral. If you write for mainly one client or online site, apply for other sites and keep those accounts active so you can rely on them during a drought.
Even the most prolific writers may find that their well runs dry on occasion. Plan ahead and have another water source at the ready. Plant your xeric writer's garden now.
Very creative and very true!
